Are you confused about all the different names for artificial grass?

It’s fair enough if you are—there have been many different names used over the years.

That’s why we’ve put together this little guide that explains the difference between artificial grass, synthetic grass, AstroTurf, fake grass and other commonly used terms.

Also, read on to find out about the Turf Green range of grasses—and why ours are the highest quality on the market.

What is artificial grass?

Artificial grass is a carpet of green synthetic fibres that are made to look like real grass.

These days, artificial grass is the most common ‘umbrella’ term used to describe all kinds of manufactured grass. But it’s also interchangeable with other terms like:

  • artificial turf
  • synthetic grass
  • synthetic turf

What is AstroTurf?

AstroTurf isn’t a general term for artificial grass; it’s a brand name for a product developed in the USA in the 1960s. No one really uses the term ‘AstroTurf’ anymore to refer to synthetic grasses. That is unless, of course, they’re referring to the actual product, AstroTurf.

When people say 'AstroTurf' to refer to all synthetic grasses, it's in the same way we might refer to plasters as 'Band-Aids' even though we aren't referring to the specific brand. But, when shopping for the perfect grass for your needs, it's important to make the distinction.

AstroTurf vs Artificial Grass

Just like generic artificial turf, AstroTurf is made of synthetic fibres and infill installed on a backing that can be laid across a surface to create a realistic grass-like floor.

AstroTurf's only point of difference to generic artificial turf it that their brand caters specifically to sports applications, targeting fields and pitches for games like football and hockey.

What is fake grass?

Sometimes, artificial turf is called 'fake grass'. This is a general term that was once popular to describe manufactured grass. But, like AstroTurf, this term has fallen out of favour and isn’t used very often in the synthetic grass industry.

So, there’s no need to use the term ‘fake grass’ to refer to modern grasses. Instead, we suggest calling it artificial grass or synthetic turf.

It's all the same concept: fibres made to look like grass but without the maintenance requirements and seasonality, suitable for lawns, sports centres and fields, putting greens, playgrounds, and more!

Why buy Turf Green artificial grass carpet?

The convenience artificial turf offers, along with its great year-round green look, makes it a popular choice for homeowners. Similarly, with the addition of a great return on investment, it's a standout option for businesses, for example recreational centres.

Artificial turf requires very little maintenance compared to regular grass, and has the environmental benefit of less water use. It can be more expensive in the short-term, but a better investment over time.

Our artificial grass carpet is as close to natural grass as you will find anywhere—in both look and feel. In fact, it’s so life-like it’s very difficult to tell it apart from natural grass.
