bowling green maintenance
Bowling green maintenance is linked to its performance. Maintenance requirements for each type of green will differ, and each supplier may provide customised maintenance programs.

Bowling green maintenance can be a complicated job, but it can result in beautiful landscapes when done correctly. You can refer to the guidelines provided in this article about how to maintain your bowling green.

The following is a broad general overview of the maintenance requirements for bowling greens.

1. Watering

The sand base of a green will likely need to be watered to maintain the levels of moisture required for a uniform green speed. Just a few minutes of light sprinkling should suffice. Don’t overwater the surface, but thoroughly dampen it.

It is essential to install an irrigation system based on the watering needs of your area. Taking this straightforward step will save you a lot of time and effort, ensuring your green is adequately watered.

2. Grooming

An adequately groomed field is conducive to maintaining surface drainage, levelling sand, dispersing compaction, and removing dead algae and moss. While grooming, set the power brush to penetrate 2 to 3mm to penetrate surfaces deeply.

Generally, the surface should be groomed every month or as recommended by the surface supplier. Purchasing a leaf blower will help remove leaves from the green.

3. Weed control

Control the growth of weeds before they become a problem. Spraying with an approved chemical is generally the treatment procedure, as determined by the surface supplier, followed by letting the surface air dry. The surface then needs to be groomed with a power brush. Finally, a stiff yard broom can be used to groom small areas.

4. Vacuuming

To remove any loose material on the surface, use a vacuum that the synthetic surface manufacturer has approved. It is advisable to vacuum at a walking pace without bumping into things stopping.

Make sure not to over vacuum and only vacuum the surface when it is completely dry. In general, the surface should be cleaned about once every six months, based on the installer’s recommendations.

An initial pre-soaking of the surface is followed by the use of a non-foaming cleaning solution. Following one-to-two hours of soaking, the excess water and dirt can be removed using a wet and dry machine. Pressure-washing the surface is not recommended.

5. Re-stretching

Periodic re-stretching is necessary to maintain the desired green speed of a carpet-type synthetic surface. Re-stretching is not a particularly complex procedure, but at least during the warranty period, it is highly recommended that the green installation company do this.

6. Heavy equipment

A heavy or sharp object standing on the green can indent the surface, causing damage. It is prohibited to use roller skates, skateboards, bicycles, and wheelchairs on the green because they can damage it.

You might wonder, is it possible to repair damaged artificial turf? Yes, it is. Synthetic turf is designed to last as long as possible without needing any repairs. However, it is important to remember that it is always possible to repair the damage if the problem occurs.

7. Plantings

Don’t plant trees, shrubs, or climbers close to the green. The roots and leaves of all these plants may disturb the surface of the green, and they will require additional maintenance. The installation of a root barrier is necessary if plants with aggressive rooting have been planted nearby.
